Sternschuppen
Sternschuppen is located at Volksbühne’s pavilion and has been run by artists and curators Nouchka Wolf and Valentin Wagner in shifting cooperation since 2021 (with a nine-month break when it was run by the Theaterkantine). Sternschuppen is a satellite of the Volksbühne mothership, independent in its curatorial work, yet infrastructural connected.
It is there to create a space for autonomous, non-commercial, transdisciplinary art projects to reclaim Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz as a principal “cultural marketplace” after its having been appropriated by right-wing forces during the corona pandemic. The focus lies on bringing back so-called low culture projects into established art spaces in an attempt to transform the latter and open them up for fresh forms and formats.
Berlin’s Mitte district is running the risk of losing its image as an open, accessible and diverse part of Berlin due to real estate speculation, outflow and migration of subculture actors to other parts of the city and consequent disappearance of autonomous spaces. Sternschuppen wants to counter these developments with a variety of events in the pavilion and on open spaces of the centrally-located Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz that appeal equally to Volksbühne audiences, sauntering visitors and residents, who feel pushed aside by the emergence of more and more commercial venues.
