Persian Pop Music of the 1960s and 1970s

Memory can dance – to the melodies of Persian pop music of the 1960s and 1970s. As song turns into memory, memories are set in motion. Sometimes only dance can express what language no longer can. A few years ago, Booty Carrell’s music sets made me realize that liberation often begins when you listen to an old song again. A song may turn into a collective chant in a dancehall packed with people who get up and dance to the same melodies that you once listened, cried, or mourned to in silence. It made me realize that every dance step can be an act of remembrance and resistance.

Vinyl Memories – Dancing the Unspoken combines music and dance to translate grief, loss, and memory into movement, making the unspeakable manifest. Nostalgia, political reflection and performative presence combine to create a moment, in which body and sound form new communities with the transformative potential to make dancing a liberating practice which makes us feel that memories can be kept alive.

Booty Carrell will curate a DJ set that brings the stories of past eras to life – in performative, political, and poetic ways. Participants dance, listen, feel, and make the experience how collective memory, personal grief, and hope intertwine.

Booty Carrell, aka Sebastian Reier is a Munich-based DJ, music promoter, and event organizer who has made a name for himself as a vinyl archaeologist. His focus is on Persian pop music of the 1960s and 1970s—a music scene that was dominated by women and blended the poetic roots of Persian poetry with irregular 6/8 rhythms and the global sounds of rock and pop. Inspite of repression and forced exile, this music lives on in his sets – as a reminder, as resistance, and as a source of hope. He curates music events at Munich‘s Kammerspiele, and hosts the radio show Groovie Shizzl on ByteFM. International tours led him to Thailand, Pakistan, Turkey, and all over Europe. Apart from DJing, he works as a freelance author and radio producer for DIE ZEIT, WDR, and ByteFM. His motto “Making Global Sound Local” aptly describes his practice of translating global music traditions into local, tangible experiences.
