Ville Haimala presents Hyporeal

Hyporeal is the first large-scale solo work by Ville Haimala, best known as the co-founder of Amnesia Scanner. Opening a new chapter in Haimala’s career, Hyporeal combines the extreme sonic palette of Amnesia Scanner with the less known softer compositional side of Haimala, who has scored and directed music for many critically acclaimed performances and artworks, most recently Anne Imhof’s Doom, The House of Hope at the Park Avenue Armory in New York (2025).

Conceived as an ongoing project that lives both on- and offline, Hyporeal moves between music, poetry, and performance, taking advantage of the new tools and techniques of artistic creation. At the center of the project is a continually expanding archive of recordings and sonic experiments by Haimala, serving simultaneously as source, method, and score.Collaborators such as writer and artist Jaakko Pallasvuo (avocadoibuprofen) and artist-hacker Freeka Tet are invited to feed into this unfolding codex, building performances together with Haimala and a shifting ensemble of musicians and performers.

The premiere of Hyporeal (Proem) at Volksbühne Berlin on December 9th, 2025 marks the first chapter of Hyporeal. It is this performance that sets the public facing side of the project in motion.

Amnesia Scanner is the Berlin-based Finnish duo Ville Haimala and Martti Kalliala. Founded in 2014, the group’s scope encompasses music writing, production and performance as well as its creative staging and circulation. AS has become known for their genre-generating inventiveness. Their releases often gain a cult following among influential musicians and taste-makers, going on to shape the sound of music in the ensuing years. This influencing-the-influencers position has solidified their status as a must-have electronic festival act, often headlining with a new stage production using novel technology such as animatronics or audience participation via airdrop. In releasing music, AS has taken divergent approaches using bleeding edge developments in art and aesthetics to serve an overarching narrative. Past Releases: 2014, Amnesia Scanner released their transformative debut mixtape AS Live [][][][][]. The duo interlaced a data-rich mesh of grime, trap, and rave with a machinic narrator for their critically acclaimed 2015 audio play Angels Rig Hook, and Lexachast, their cyberdrone audio-visual project with artist Harm van den Dorpel and Bill Kouligas. Two EPs for Young Turks (AS and AS Truth) followed in 2017, furthering the duo’s imaginative capabilities to project immersive sonic worlds into a dark, rave abyss. In their first LP, Another Life (2018, PAN), as well as in their 2020 full-length encore for the same label, Tearless, avant-EDM tropes are contextualized within the broader discourse of pop formalism, juxtaposing the duo’s harsh, deep-fried, synthetic signature style with canonical structures of pop songs. In 2023, Amnesia Scanner joined Freeka Tet to release STROBE.RIP continuing to mess with signs and signifiers of the sonic world.

Independently, Haimala frequently collaborates with artists such as Anne Imhof whose grand scale performances in Tate Modern, Palais De Tokyo and Park Avenue Armory NYC Haimala has been part of. He has also scored multiple works for theater, opera, and film internationally. His latest theater score premiered at the 2025 Venice Biennale. He’s also produced music for artists such as FKA Twigs and Holly Herndon and engineered records for artists like Eartheater.
